I have a typical smart people career, and my coworkers are pretty smart too. I therefore like to believe that I’m at least somewhat smart… but there’s too much evidence to the contrary.

Chat client and server for a system that is similar to IRC, but with certificates both for encryption and signing. The idea is that this will provide secure end-to-end communications as well as trusting that the person in the other end isn’t just someone with the same nickname.

I lived there for two years, and I think I met one french speaking expat during that time. Czech is the official language (surprise!), and “everyone” speaks it (apart from yours truly).

One thing I found interesting while living there was that it was usually a safe bet to assume everyone older than me knew russian as a second language, while everyone my age or younger spoke english.

I lived in Brno, which doesn’t have much tourism (just a bunch of expats), but in Prague you’ll have no problem with English, I’m sure.

I’ve taken much pleasure in shitting on Microsoft and their products for decades, but I’m also the first one to admit the products that are actually good:

• Built-in antivirus (for the past 10 years, at least)
• Notepad. (Sometimes you don’t want any features)
• Outlook Express (Newer equivalent is decent, but too buggy and bloated)
• Windows 7 (The pinnacle of an MS OS since MSDOS 6.22)

There are probably more, but those are the ones I remember off the top of my head.

…as much as I love linux, I find that it’s way too common to name software completely removed from its function.

Leaving the hospital with thousands of dollars gone is just US developers adding realism.

All of the Grand Theft Auto games have you respawn outside of a police station or a hospital.

New guy at my job, polish dude. He seemed decent enough, just a bit… odd… but most of us were; after all, we were the kind of people who are willing to work on ships on the wrong side of the world for weeks, sometimes months at a time.

I trained him to do the job I did, so he could run opposite of my shift, with some assistance from the chief tech and various others. The rest of the crew were pretty experienced, so it made it easier when he needed help with the more complex stuff. He did reasonably OK for a newhire. Nothing spectacularly good, but nothing spectacularly bad either.

Until the crewing department told us he had been arrested back home, multiple counts of murder, and we were unlikely to have him onboard again, so we needed to train his replacement.

Turned out he was a serial killer who killed people for their properties. He’s in prison now, and I’m sure you can google the person. I’m not sure what his actual name was, but we called him Winny. Any poles here who happen to remember the case and could link a news article? This happened roughly 10 years ago.

That me parents didn’t have parents growing up. It somehow never dawned on me until I was like 7 that my grandparents were their parents, despite knowing my grandparents all my life.

The situation here is so horrible I get buried under sunlight avalanches on a weekly basis. Sometimes at night, even, during summer time. As for windspills, well, I live in coastal Norway; it rains horizontally.

I blame hydroelectric and wind power for this weather pollution. Or maybe I have the cause and effect reversed, idk.

I have to admit that I’m curious about something similar; the death camps and ots mechanism seemed highly inefficient, but the fact that I have to preface any questions on the topic with how much i detest the actual concept made me conclude that it’s probably best not to ask. That’s the annoying fact about being interested in finding efficient technical solutions while also hating nazis and everything they stood for.

I am an “expert” in my field. But it’s not because I’m the best in the world at networking and servers. It’s because I am one of the few in the world who knows this highly specialized system setwork, how it integrates across VPN, and a bunch of other niche stuff. Sure, any donky with basic linux and TCP/IP skills could do my job, but it’d take years to train them on this particular setup. And that’s because experts are mostly this: highly specialized in what they do well.

We have multiple experts at my job, and we frequently have to call each other due to ineptitude in what is outside of what we normally do. Ask me how to right click on a mac and I’ll come up short. Ask me how to fix some broken O365 setup and I’ll have to guess based on 20 years outdated IMAP setups that I haven’t touched in one and a half decade.

It’s easy to find experts. But experts in the exact thing you need are rare.

I wish I could forget all about Day of the Tentacle, so I could play it all over again and rediscover everything.
