    Most Americans on the west coast call any place a shipping container can unload or an aircraft carrier to dock a port.

    A grand total of zero Americans would ever think to disambiguate a warm water port or not. Especially from Texas. That’s the weird part. Not the word port itself.

    Harbor is usually reserved for non-commercial or fishing use only.

    This is exactly why having a couple of big instances is so beneficial. I don’t want to have to manage the infrastructure of Lemmy. I don’t want to think about banning instances for csam in particular. I want to be able to go to a place that has a set of rules I understand and that takes care of it for me.

    Honestly, I don’t think there needs to be a discussion about defederation anymore… maybe a non-stickied post… but the people who are against it need to leave / get over it. To the rest of us sane people, defederation is 100% an obvious necessity in an open social structure where things like csam even exists as a possibility. Even something as benign as bots is reason enough to defederate.

    Just do it. We don’t need to agonize over it or talk about it anymore. There are a lot of assholes in the world. I don’t need to engage with them.

    Anecdotes are not science.

    Obesity and poor diet together do increase the risk of T2. There is a hereditary aspect to it but T2 is 100% a result of lifestyle or other diseases. People don’t spontaneously develop T2 diabetes without eating too much… and sugar is the primary cause of the metabolic imbalance that results in T2 diabetes. It’s not fucking magic that the A1C level is tied directly to your sugar and simple carbohydrate intake… it is literally the result of using carbohydrates as fuel for your body.

    We aren’t criticizing lonely people. Go take your strawman elsewhere.

    Incel/NEET/sigma/Redpill “culture” 100% deserves as much and as frequent derision as fucking possible. The only remotely positive thing these horrendous ideas perpetuate for their target audience is the “grind mindset” (which in itself is horrifying). The only reason the “grind mindset” is helpful in these situations is that it helps people stuck in this world get into the real world.

    California also has more homeless than other states… Reasonable weather and they don’t get thrown in jail? Homeless people migrate here for those reasons.

    I also wish we did a better job… It’s not that California doesn’t spend money on the problem… It’s just the money we have spent has been ineffective. If we could get more housing first options maybe it would be better? It sucks though to go downtown sometimes.

    Governments can absolutely force backdoors into individual servers. The point you are making about the UK is true for any matrix servers hosted in or by a UK entity. It’s not isolated to Signal. It’s debatable if matrix clients will be legal to distribute in the UK after their law goes into effect.
