  • The 00s were also filled with corporations monopolizing entire portions of the industry with almost no resistance, even going so far as to have protections for their empires legislated. We’re aware of what happens and we get mad about it, before we were ignorant to everything except for what we were told by those mega corporations.

IBM’s proprietary software runs all financial transactions in the USA. Apple and Microsoft are the only commercial operating systems. nVidia can sue the pants off of anybody who even thinks about rendering things in a similar manner to their GPU firmware capabilities.

  • I worry my singular grandchild will think of me as someone wasteful who had every opportunity to fix things but did nothing. I worry that I may never have the opportunities needed to do net good in the world because the generations before did everything in their power to consolidate wealth and keep us all under their thumbs, even at the expense of their own majority because their idiocy placed more value in short term satisfaction than knowledge and freedom. Worst of all is I can’t even be truly angry at them, because they will suffer the most of all, abandoned in low budget homes waiting for the failing system of medicine to let them die.

My Nephew thinks I’m cool, though, so I’ve got that going for me.

I wrote an eight paragraph response and then deleted it and condensed down the highlights.

    • Millennials and Gen Z have to pay many times over what it cost the Gen X for a quality education but they still have more than twice as many four year degree holders as Gen X had in their 30s.

    • The Boomers aren’t running anything anymore, they’re median age 66 ffs. Gen X are the new corporate overlords. Their first act as voters was either Reagan or Bush Sr, both of whom gutted most systems of oversight.

    • They’ve devoted their lives to sex, drugs, and alcohol.

    • They still share the boomer view on gender roles, that only men wear pants and go to work, that girls like pink and boys like blue. Anything outside of that very specific framework is viewed as creepy and immoral.

In the nicest way possible, the world will be much better when Gen X is gone.

  • Well, now that the community has had a few years to reverse engineer it I assume there are a lot of better and easier ways to replace the firmware with an open source quick fix. So, it’s not like my way is the only way. It was just necessary at the time. In fact, the community worked very fast to find a way to hack these “System on a Chip” architectures since the ARM chips were first released. They’re used in Macs, phones, TVs etc and have a very high power efficiency, but it is a very clear design choice to make them extremely difficult for the user to access and customize.

  • Back in 2019 I wanted a nice LED screen with high resistance to screen burn but the only economic option was a Samsung Smart TV.

I actually ended up getting it, ordering a custom mount for the ARM Chip, and using an input method on the chip that makes it run Java natively so that I could make the Smart TV drop it’s firmware onto a USB and from there I could modify it, since it was just running a version of Linux.

So that’s the story of how I un-smarted my TV. Get fucked, Samsung.

  • Even if they were affected by any measurable amount, the photons move so much faster than the air that it’s an absolutely negligible difference incapable of being measured. It’s like 1 trillion divided by 1 trillion and 1 equaling approximately 1. The outcome is unaffected by the extra 1. It’s a non-factor. I’m trying to explain this for the future not-smart-people but I think I’m just making it much worse.
