  • Given HP Lovecraft’s known status as a paranoid raging bigot, I wonder if there’s some game where the elder gods are cool actually, the “cultists” are just people broadening their horizons into cosmic queer transhumanism, and the investigators are just close-minded people wishing to restore their own sense of normalcy. Which, true to form, about half the time awaken into these horizons anyway.





  • I get the risks of putting all eggs in one basket, but whenever people argue for competition using Epic as an example, a company that is demonstrably more anti-competitive and anti-consumer, it shows that they just think of the matter of theoretical ideals of evenness as opposed to benefits to the customers. I don’t see any good coming from Epic having as much or more marketshare than Steam.

    Unlike GOG which only offers DRM-free games, a substantial advantage compared to any other store.




  • I’ve seen people bringing this up, but while they talk of EEE and XMPP, it seems like the analogy here is not being quite finished and formulated.

    If we apply that to this, it seems like people are saying “if Meta changed the ActivityPub protocol to favor them and become incompatible with the rest of the Fediverse, Fediverse users would choose to return to Meta-owned platforms.”

    And that’s what I’m questioning. Would you? Would you think others here would? I wouldn’t. I’d rather go to whatever fork Fediverse devs favor instead. If anything, all the fear being expressed every time Threads integration is brought up only emphasizes that this is not how it would play out




  • That doesn’t add up, in this case. If they simply announced a revenue share, something that Unreal Engine already has, it wouldn’t have been anywhere as controversial. Some devs would grumble but it wouldn’t have been taken as an existential threat worth jumping ship as soon as possible.

    The whole charge per download was likely an attempt to get more money out of freemium mobile games, but nobody was willing to accept that.

    Really, the damage to their image so significant, it’s likely many dev studios will drop it even under those conditions, just out of lost trust.


  • I don’t know why anyone would put that much effort into doing something so convoluted if not just to prove the point that they could. Which feels like it’s against the spirit of the game.

    It’s not even the “use object” action that kills them as much as fall damage, which is not defined by the level of the one pulling the lever. This is more comparable binding someone to an anchor and pushing them into a body of water. It’s not a personal ability, it’s an environmental effect.

    I don’t really like the implication of your comment and the original post that it’s unreasonable to try such a thing just because the number used to categorize the spell is too low.

    This seems the best reason to refuse it, frankly. Spells have a reference of how damaging they ought to be, that’s what HP is supposed to measure. It’d be just as easy to say “but if fire/acid/steel hits the target just in the right way that’d kill them on the spot”. The main reference we have to whether it hit them good and how much they can endure is the HP. Why shouldn’t we be using the numbers the game gave us expressly for the purpose of measuring power?

    If we are just gonna bypass these basic mechanics with improv, why not to let the Fighter player say that they are trying to cut off the enemy’s head with every hit? But if we let that fly we aren’t playing D&D anymore, just some loosely d20 based improv.

    A 1st level spell focused on damage does at most 3d8, but Create Water is definitely not focused on that. The most generous version of that I could accept is 3d4 damage with a dex save for no damage, because if they close their mouth and stop breathing it just doesn’t work. You might end up running out of spells slots before the target dies.
