Me: Should I buy a prebuilt 3D printer?

Reddit 3D printing sub: Oh, heck no. I put mine together for $18.22 plus some spare parts from seven printers I got of craigslist for $1 from some widow. Only took me three weekends to do it, plus a couple hundred hours to update the firmware to match the parts and troubleshoot it.

Me: Uh, so does it print better than the one I could just buy?

Reddit: Well, I’m still tuning it for all my filaments. I’ve been through about 40kg, and I’ve got a trashcan full of benchys though. The last few have been pretty good.

Cheapest city with moderately decent public transit is probably Washington DC. With an average home price comparable to the one I live in without public transit of about $600,000 more than my current home. Even if I didn’t own my truck outright (8 years old, 58k miles) and the price of gasoline doubled, my payback period for 100% free public transit is greater than infinity with a 5% cost of money calculated in.

It’s a bit like solar. I’ve run the numbers, and had others run the numbers, and the conclusion is that it would require replacing solar panels twice before I made back my investment, even with a 0% loan for the panels and install.

I’d love to be part of it. I’d love to have European-style public transit. Even in the few places where viable public transit exists in the US, it’s not affordable to move to those places. shrug

If only I could afford to live near transit…

Fuck off. I accidentally tried it out for the first time this weekend. I’m not even a fan of card based games. I have no idea where 5 hours went.

I feel so bad for mine I’ve raised the amount I tip them every month from ~12% to 20%. You should, too - they struggle so hard.

I still have not found a competent (free) program on android that lets me mark up a pdf. They all claim to, but most (including fully-paid Adobe) won’t let you turn off finger marking. MFers, I have a stylus; I want my fingers to pan/zoom and my god damned stylus to make a line. Why is that so foreign?

I’ve kept 10 on my workstation, and let my laptop go to 11. I have only one beef with 11 and that I’d that I’ve had some taskbar folders I used as shortcut menus, and they take an extra click to get to on 11. Otherwise it’s practically transparent. Feels more like W10 SP3, really.

You could. But then they could also deactivate your ignition of it doesn’t phone home every 1/2/3 week. For “safety” reasons.

The phone number gatekeeping is annoying. I think ChatGPT requires it. I can’t use it because it won’t accept my phone number as I only use VoIP numbers. Never mind they used to be land and cell numbers I posted there. Same with some banking sites. No sms 2FA allowed because the gateway they use can’t jump to voip - the codes just never arrive.

From a user interaction POV, just have a couple of accounts. I started out on a small server, got a .world and kbin account, then got a beehaw account. If a server is down, I just switch instances.

From a community standpoint, it’s terrible because the instance hosts the only live version of the communities. IMHO communities shouldn’t be instance specific. Every (federated) instance should have a two-way aggregation of identically named communities. That has some (minor) drawbacks, but is much better for new users to understand and is much more resilient to individual instance failures and outages. (/rant.off)
