The codecs thing is wack. I can explain to people that maybe their distro doesn’t come with a video player because the idea is that they get to choose their preference, but I’ve lost once I have to also explain that none of their video files will even work since they didn’t also install codecs.

It’s crazy that Linux distros think that installing codecs is a reasonable expectation for users. Especially users new to Linux.
